This project involved working the Zoem Bikes which wanted to branch out into the food ‘truck’ space (Foodtruck Bakfietsen) but still use their cargo bike as the platform for exploring the concept. We (clearly) had some fun with the final presentation and marketing video for the client. From the images below you can get a further glimpse into the design process.
Pizzeria Bike
Client: Zoem Bikes
ASSIGNMENT: Design a cargo bike body capable of transporting, preparing and selling food (Foodtruck Bakfietsen)
This was a hands on project which pushed our team to work not only on the overall design but also to successfully meet the client’s needs. They came to the IDE students with a firm idea of what they are looking for in the end product but very few parameters to guide us in the process. This “Foodtruck Bakfietsen” project involved modifications to an existing cargo bike frame which would result in functionality on many levels: food storage, cooling, cooking, and serving — all while being mobile!
To tackle the issue we worked backwards. We designed the look and aesthetics of the cargo part of the bike first because we needed to work with an existing cargo bike design, then figured out how we would fit all the necessary components within that design for functionality.
The creative part was choosing the cuisine and creating the customer experience. With two Italians on our 4-member team, we (happily) chose pizza. Not only did our research show there was a market for this product but the requirements for getting a pizza to a customer quickly seemed like a reasonable thing to offer within the Foodtruck bakfietsen challenge (as opposed to baking cakes or preparing something more elaborate).
We incorporated a pizza oven which promises a fresh pizza in under 2 minutes that can be fueled by either wood-pellets or gas. In addition we worked on creating a unique and positive customer experience. In the design studio, the team did a lot of research, user-testing and experimentation to figure everything out.
We also sampled a lot of pizza.
