street photography
I have always had an interest in visual arts mainly photography and video. The hour-long commute by train to and from Delft from Den Haag on rainy winter days opened up an unexpected creative opportunity - one that was born out of frustration. At the Formula Cruisers/Living Labs warehouse where I was working I was struggling with getting good quality photos with the poor lighting conditions - there seemed to be no easy solution.
While researching options to overcome the technical challenges in the Living Labs warehouse and experimenting with low-light photography techniques, I ran across images from the renowned Croatian street photographer Olga Karlovac. She used film cameras to take intentionally-blurry, abstract, high-contrast black and white photos. “Shooting through window panes, using abstract reflections created by rain and setting long exposure times, Olga manages to totally distort shapes and create restless, fleeting, pictorial photographs. Her subjects thus become suspended shapes, elongated silhouettes, ectoplasmic figures.” I loved the creativity, the process and look she was able to achieve so tried my best to replicate it with a digital camera. Learning how to create this style of photo intentionally helped me to solve the problem in the warehouse. This is what I managed to capture from my morning commute, in the style of Olga Karlovac.
