When people ask me “What do you do?” the best answer really is “What do you need?”
Because of my interests and background spans the arts and sciences and because there is a clear need, I’d love to be exclusively doing visually-based science communications. Some of my work involves a “full-service” contract but there are others where I get to work closely with a writer, photographer or the scientists themselves. Below are a few communications pieces that showcase some of the what I do, from making charts and figures, formatting publications or just presenting ideas a pretty package. National Malaria Elimination Programme
When I married into malaria work I never envisioned how intimately I’d come to know about the parasite and the female mosquito who sucks up infected blood and then spreads the disease when she feeds again – she just wants the protein in your blood for her eggs. As a scientist I was hooked. But knowing about this disease and the proven ways to prevent it is not enough: you must meet the audience on their terms with messages and materials that are both relevant and compelling. For this project, the audience was potential donors, including the private sector. The challenge was framing the problem and the solution – targeted investment – in an attractive package. International Schools
Working with the international schools in Lusaka has been a rewarding experience. The Lusaka International Community School is a favorite client and this is a favorite project: the LICS ViewBook, a result of collaboration between teachers, principals, administrators, photographers, and parents. This publication is shared digitally with parents and students – for viewing or downloading – through an Adobe publishing platform that can be updated easily.
InHouse Design Studio has a heart for school products: photography, logo updates, reports, calendars, brochures, apparel design, banners, posters, social media posts, and event promotion. (Click on image to view magazine)

University of Maryland School of Medicine
The North Star of InHouse Design Studio is ‘Communicating science to the public’. This project, a collaboration of program administrators, medical doctors, and photographers for the University of Maryland School of Medicine, is a nice reflection of that mission. (Click on image to view magazine)

lusaka helps
Lusaka Helps is a grassroots movement that emerged in March 2020 in response to the need for accurate and useful information about SARS-Cov-2 / COVID-19. Lusaka Helps translates the very complicated science behind the virus and its transmission and promotes public health and safety. We are grateful to this community of experts and friends who continue to serve with their time and energy.
InHouse Design Studio is one of many contributors to the Johns Hopkins Bloomburg School of Public Health COVID 19 Communications Network. (Click on image to view a sample of this work from the COVID 19 Communications Network)
